Lending Origination Software: Speeding Up Decisions Without Adding Risk

Updated June 18, 2019By the CalliArc team

Key takeaway

Most of the delay in lending is waiting for documents and manual data entry, not credit assessment. Automating capture and verification typically removes days; keep the decision rules explicit and explainable, because an automated decline must be justifiable to both the customer and the regulator.

Borrowers judge lenders on how long an answer takes. Behind most slow decisions is a process where a person re-keys information the applicant already provided and then waits for a document to arrive by email.

Where the days actually go

  • Incomplete applications that bounce back and forth for missing information.
  • Manual document collection — payslips, statements, identification — and manual reading of them.
  • Re-keying between the application form, the core system, and the credit file.
  • Queueing for a human review that, for most applications, confirms what the rules already determined.

What to automate first

  • Application capture with inline validation, saved progress, and the ability to resume on another device.
  • Identity and document verification through a specialist provider rather than by eye.
  • Data enrichment — credit bureau, bank transaction categorisation, business registry — pulled automatically into the case.
  • A rules engine that auto-approves and auto-declines the clear cases, sending only genuine edge cases to an underwriter.

Automated decisions carry obligations

  • Every decision must be explainable: which rules fired, on what data, at what time. Record the inputs as they were at decision time.
  • Provide adverse action reasons where regulation requires them, in language a customer understands.
  • Monitor outcomes for disparate impact across protected characteristics — a model or rule set can produce discriminatory results without using a prohibited field.
  • Version the rules and keep the history; auditors will ask what the policy was on a specific date last year.
  • Keep a human review route, and track how often it overturns the automated outcome — that rate is the health check on your rules.

Integration realities

The origination system sits between customer-facing channels and a core banking or servicing platform that is usually older and less flexible. Design the integration so origination can move quickly without waiting for core system releases: an explicit interface, asynchronous handoff at booking, and reconciliation. Trying to do origination inside the core platform is how these projects become multi-year programmes.
